BresBet Ceases Trading After UKGC Suspends Its Licence
Bookmaker BresBet has told its customers it is closing down for good, just over a week after the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) suspended its licence. The firm emailed account holders at 5pm on Friday, 4 September 2026, to say it would cease operating, less than two weeks after the regulator halted its ability to take bets.
What’s actually changed
The Gambling Commission suspended the operating licences of BresBet Ltd and its sister company Bet St George Ltd on 28 August 2026, after
the suspensions followed Commission enquiries that revealed suspected social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings
. Both licences were placed under a formal review, with the regulator confirming that
a review was being undertaken under section 116 of the Gambling Act 2005 and that the suspension would remain in place until it was satisfied the business was compliant

A suspension is not the same as a closure – it simply stops an operator taking new bets while the Commission investigates, and
a licence suspension stops a British operator from taking bets from the moment it is issued, before any review has reached a conclusion
. Customers were still able to log in and withdraw funds throughout that period, and the Commission had made clear that both firms were expected to treat consumers fairly while the review continued.
BresBet, which had operated since 2021 (initially via a white-label arrangement before securing its own remote licence), had been a prominent sponsor in horseracing and greyhound racing, including a high-profile tie-up with trainer Fergal O’Brien’s Gloucestershire stable.
Since the suspension, BresBet had not been accepting bets, and it emailed account holders at 5pm on Friday, September 4, to inform them that it would cease operating.
Bet St George, a newer operator launched in March 2026 and linked to BresBet through founder Nic Brereton, remains suspended, with no announcement yet on whether it will follow BresBet into closure or attempt to resolve the Commission’s concerns.
What it means for you
If you held an account with BresBet, the practical priority now is your money. During a suspension, operators are required to keep account access open so customers can withdraw funds, and that expectation does not disappear once a firm announces it is winding down – if anything, it becomes more pressing. Anyone with a balance should contact BresBet’s support channels promptly to arrange a withdrawal rather than assume funds will be returned automatically.
