BresBet Suspended by UKGC Over Money-Laundering Concerns
The Gambling Commission has suspended the operating licences of online bookmaker BresBet and its sister brand Bet St George, after inquiries uncovered suspected failings in anti-money laundering controls and social responsibility duties. The suspension took effect on Friday 28 August 2026 and will remain in place until the regulator is satisfied both businesses are compliant.
What’s actually changed
In a statement published on its website, the Commission said the suspension of BresBet and Bet St George Ltd follows commission inquiries which revealed suspected social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings. The regulator confirmed it is now carrying out a review of both licences under section 116 of the Gambling Act 2005 and the suspension will remain in place until the commission is satisfied the businesses are compliant.
Importantly, the suspension does not lock customers out of their money. The suspension, which takes place immediately, does not prevent either operator from allowing consumers to access their accounts and withdrawing funds. Both firms remain contactable through their websites for account queries.
BresBet responded on social media, saying it was working through the situation. The company posted that BresBet is currently temporarily unavailable following the suspension of its operating licence by the Gambling Commission, and that it was working through the matter and would provide further updates when appropriate. The BresBet website itself displayed a notice describing the site as unavailable and directing customers to email its support address for queries.
The firm was launched in 2021 and sponsors events across horseracing and greyhound racing, while also being the leading sponsor at trainer Fergal O’Brien’s stable in Gloucestershire. Its remote betting, casino and bingo licences were first granted by the Commission in February 2025, and the business is registered in Sheffield.
What it means for you
If you hold an account with BresBet or Bet St George, you should still be able to log in to withdraw any funds held in your account, even though new bets and deposits are unavailable while the sites are offline. This is standard practice during a Gambling Commission suspension: the regulator’s priority is to freeze new activity while it investigates, not to trap customer balances. If you experience delays getting a response from either brand, the Commission’s own consumer guidance recommends keeping records of your account balance and any correspondence in case a formal complaint or ADR (alternative dispute resolution) referral becomes necessary later.
A licence suspension is not the same as a final finding of wrongdoing. It means the Commission has seen enough during its enquiries to justify pausing trading while a fuller section 116 review takes place. That review could end in anything from a return to normal trading with additional conditions, to a financial penalty, to permanent licence revocation, depending on what investigators find.
The bigger picture
Anti-money laundering and social responsibility failings have become the most common grounds cited when the Commission takes enforcement action against betting and gaming operators, spanning both online-only firms and long-established high street names. Suspensions themselves are relatively unusual compared with financial penalties, which remain the regulator’s more typical tool, but they are not without precedent among smaller or newer online operators that have failed to build robust checks into their onboarding and monitoring processes.
For a firm still only in its second year of full UKGC licensing, having built a public profile through high-profile racing sponsorships, the suspension is a reminder that visibility in the sport it sponsors offers no shortcut around the compliance obligations every licensed operator must meet, regardless of size or how long they have held a licence.
